Neat campground near Savannah, GA

Posted from Red Gate Campground, Savannah, GA
(Click on pics to enlarge)

We successfully made it out of hot, humid Florida and we're now heading north (slowly) toward Virginia.  We have never been to Savannah, GA so we thought we'd make a stop in that area for a few days of exploration.

Thanks to our FTing friends Paul and Laura Hutchison, we've landed at Red Gate RV Campground. It's not too many miles off of I-95, then to I-16 and Chatham Parkway.

This is a somewhat unusual campground in that it was originally Georgia's oldest Jersey dairy cattle farm many years ago.  It is now basically owned by two families who run a small campground on part of the property, maintain a riding stable, and host weddings and other events in their buildings.

The number of campsites is relatively small, but you don't feel as though you're camping on top of each other.  I wish that more campgrounds would post these kind of signs.

We chose a FHU site, but they also have W/E sites as well. This area has pull thrus and back-ins.  Our pull thru is a bit unusual, as you "pull thru" the open field to leave.

There are actually quite a few amenities on the property.  Here's a picture of the rear patio area of the "club house".

There are several large ponds on the grounds and anyone is free to fish in them.  I thought this one looked particularly inviting after a hot, humid GA afternoon.

There is a very nice pool with ample deck area for sunning or a covered patio area for hosting a small get together.  Since we're attempting to stick with our water aerobics exercises a pool is a welcome feature while traveling.

This isn't one of the horses for riding, but I just thought he looked pretty neat with his woolly coat.

Moving away from the campground, we took a drive down to Tybee Island today for some sightseeing.  Here's a picture of the Tybee lighthouse.

We only have a few days in Savannah, so we've decided to purchase a 2-day Trolley Tour where we can learn about the city and get on and off at our leisure over the next two days.

As always, more pictures concerning today's blog are available for viewing in our Google+ Album.

Thanks for dropping by to take a look!

  3. We've never been to Savannah by RV and good to know about this campground. I like the idea of the two day trolley pass for seeing the sites.

    1. Larry we will complete the second day of our trolley tour tomorrow and hopefully give a blog report shortly, but it seems to be a very good way to get around the city without looking for a place to park and fighting the traffic. The get on-get off feature is working out well.

    1. We love Savannah. (Although it's pretty warm and humid right now) The proximity of the CG is working out well and the trolley tour we are using makes a stop right in the CG to pick us up and take us downtown.

  5. We loved Savannah, on our list of favorite towns for sure. And the trolley was a good choice, we do the trolley thing when ever we can. Great way to get the history AND get around town. Have fun!!

  6. Sure don't envy you the heat of the south at this time of the year but the campground looks like a nice one to use to visit that beautiful city. Especially with the trolley. Thanks for showing it to me.
